What an interesting evening we had this last Wednesday. Our theme for speeches was “Beware the Ides of March” and our two speakers gave us a very different view of the subject. Susan spoke from the heart about her bad experience when renting out property and succinctly pointed out some of the dangers when handling tenants. Her title was Beware and it fitted nicely with the theme, especially as her Ides of March was indeed the 15th - but she actually met with success at her deadline by getting back into her own property.
This was of course unlike Julius Caesar who met a very different end at his Ides of March. And this was bought home by Mercedes in her great speech around Empires; the forming of them, the definition of them, examples of the Egyptian and Alexander the Great creation of one. She “debated” the wisdom and reasons for mankind creating Empires and tried hard to convince us that mankind would be better served by attempting to “Complement rather than Conquer each other”.
Well done to both speakers for well structured, well delivered and entertaining speeches.
Allan updated the club with details of the two forthcoming events
1. The training day for the English based clubs on Saturday the 5th May – details to be issued shortly, and
2. The UK Conference to be held in Lytham St Annes on Friday – Sunday 15-17th June. As two of the BISC members, Rob and Lucy, are competing in the Speech contest...one of them has to become UK Winner surely; and Carole will also be presenting one of her workshops at conference so all BISC members are encouraged to attend. Details of the programme and weekend costs to be forwarded shortly.
Finally our workshop, delivered by Beryl took us into the world of using quotations and even poetry within our speeches. She outlined dangers and benefits before breaking us into teams to put the learning into practise. Members and Guests tried hard to “play with words”, caused a few ripples of laughter and thoroughly enjoyed the workshop. Beryl left us all with a personal challenge to add quotes into our forthcoming speeches.
The whole evening was managed superbly by Margaret, she organised her helpers/evaluators and timekeeper and made sure the evening ran smoothly and to time.
A great and successful night was had by all!
As Emerson said “nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm”.
Cheers everyone, see you on the 28th for the Art of Persuasion
